Sioux's blog: We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday… Or Are We?

It’s that time of year again, the school summer holidays are just around the corner, there is sun in the sky and many people are preparing themselves for a trip abroad. I was meant to be going on holiday too. We had it all booked, 7 nights in an all-inclusive resort by the sea so we could pick between the pool or the beach, enjoy the unlimited ice cream and explore the local town. I was so excited. I’d booked this nearly a year ago and had been gearing myself up to slather on the suncream and board a plane to far away. But then our plans changed. After losing our cat to a road accident, we decided to move house. Not just to give our remaining cats a safer home and neighbourhood to live in but to also be closer to my aging in-laws. They support us with babysitting and we plan to support them as they get older and need more care. So we’re moving for all the right reasons but when staring down the barrel of stamp duty, solicitors’ fees, removal men and more we just didn’t feel we could then justify the cost of going abroad too.

But I won’t let that stop us from having the best summer. We’ll just be doing it in a more local way and that’s ok. Perhaps a visit to our nearby zoo, a train ride to a new town, a meal by a lake with a playground – cancelling my holiday abroad has actually helped me explore more of what is on my doorstep and I’ve realised we don’t need to travel very far at all to have some amazing and unique experiences. So don’t feel sorry for me as I anxiously wait to exchange (I understand why moving house is listed as one of the most stressful life experiences), my family and I are going to have a cracking summer right here in the Home Counties and London.

Sioux lives in a village outside Milton Keynes with her husband, young son, 3 cats and 2 dogs. When not managing the chaos of home, she works for a large housing association looking after health, wellbeing and engagement.
