Lynden's blog: Feeling Well?

If You Feel Well, You’ll Probably Do Well… But What Does “Feeling Well” Even Mean?

I heard someone say recently in a non-health related webinar, “If you feel well, you’ll probably do well,” and it stopped me in my tracks. Not because it was profound, but because I realised I wasn’t entirely sure what “feeling well” meant anymore.

Once upon a time, feeling well meant sleeping through the night, eating a healthy salad, and fitting into jeans without negotiating with physics. Now, in the menopausal era of my life, feeling well seems to be a more… interpretive concept.

Take weight loss, for example. I’m doing all the things the experts recommend. I’m walking, I’m hydrating, I’m eating like someone who has a deep and meaningful relationship with chickpeas. And yet the scales remain unmoved, like a stubborn Victorian child refusing to come downstairs. It’s not that I’m doing anything wrong; it’s that my body has simply entered a new phase where the rules have changed and no one left me the manual.

So, I’ve started redefining what “feeling well” looks like. Maybe it’s not about shrinking, tightening, or transforming. Maybe it’s about noticing the small things that make me feel grounded: a walk where my brain finally quiets down, a moment of laughter that reminds me I’m still very much alive, or a day where my energy doesn’t evaporate by lunchtime.

Feeling well, I’m learning, is less about perfection and more about permission. Permission to rest. Permission to adjust. Permission to accept that wellbeing during menopause isn’t a straight line; it’s a series of gentle pivots, tiny experiments, and occasional muttered swear words (ok, I confess to more than occasional!).

And perhaps doing well doesn’t come from feeling flawless, but from feeling supported, connected, and just well enough to keep going with humour intact.

After all, if menopause has taught me anything, it’s this: sometimes “doing well” simply means you’ve remembered where you left your glasses.
