Eliza's blog: Third Time's The Charm

It’s safe to say that moving flats has become a common theme in these blogs; but you know what they say, third times a charm. In March, I again moved to a different flat, this time with one of my work colleagues. Although, I think it’s fair to say this work colleague could now be referred to as a friend, since we passed the significant milestone of seeing each other outside of work.

My dad was relieved I had finally found a nice flat with some friends, however his back was already going into spasm at the thought of carrying two cars worth of stuff up six flights of stairs. On March 1st, the day had come. Having enlisted the help of seven different people throughout the course of move-in day, it made me question how much stuff I really have. I am an incredibly impulsive person, if I want something I tend to just buy it. I’m not talking designer handbags or shoes, but candles, diffusers, and anything cosy for my room, is coming home with me. This made the move slightly more challenging, but it was well worth it in the end. I think there is a lot to be said for making your bedroom a place to feel safe, a place to relax, and a place to get home drunk and forget to take your make up off. Therefore, the occasional bit of room décor here and there I allow myself to buy as it makes me feel comfortable in that space. Nonetheless, I am trying to be more mindful with my purchases so the spontaneous trips to Oliver Bonas have been put on hold.

Beyond controlling my slightly unfortunate shopping habits, I have had more change to manage in my life. I moved jobs in March after over two years at my previous company. I wasn’t planning to move just yet, but an opportunity arose, and I had a good feeling about it. Being 24 and at a time in my life where I don’t have to worry about a mortgage, a family and all those important commitments, I felt it was time for my next challenge and a logical next step in my career. So, where is the big move you wonder? I have moved to a Hedge Fund to work in similar HR job. It’s safe to say that moving jobs at the same time as moving flat was nothing short of stressful. Although being so busy each day has meant I can’t overthink as much as I normally do. This has been a blessing when starting the job as it can be an anxious time for anyone, even the best of us. Despite all the change, the job is going well, and I feel challenged in a positive way. I have the space to grow in my role and make a real impact in the work I will be doing. The commute is ideal, the people are all friendly, I can’t complain. Change is scary. However, during periods of change is when you show yourself all the things you can achieve and in turn when you feel most accomplished. I find this reassuring whenever I try something new as I know how good I will feel after, even if it doesn’t go to plan. I constantly put myself out my comfort zone and I consider that a win.

Eliza (24), works in HR at an Investment Bank in the City of London. When she is not at work she spends her time playing netball, seeing friends and exploring all the coffee shops South West London has to offer.
